'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition': Shocking Hardships Along The Way

Tony was spotlighted in the season premiere of "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on ABC), and he easily had one of the most challenging struggles of anyone who has ever tried to lose weight. During his very first workout with Chris Powell, he got a phone call that his son, who was stricken with cerebral palsy, was dying.

But Tony powered through, using his son's odds-defying life as motivation to regain control of his life. As his year working with Powell progressed, Tony broke up with his fiancee because she didn't support his weight-loss goals, and even wound up homeless for a period of time. And ultimately, his son did pass away.

But throughout everything, Tony stayed committed to his weight loss, and had amazing results because of his resolve and work. He started the program weighing 398 pounds and ended it exactly 200 pounds less than that. It was easily one of the most inspirational and emotional hours of television on the night.

And Tony's happy ending didn't end with his new-found health and physique. He found a new love along the way, proposing to her after the program wrapped filming. Talk about climbing out of the darkness and into the light.

New stories of inspiration and struggle will feature every week on "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition," Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
