What movie comes to mind when thinking of films that portray women in a positive way? Would it perhaps be 'Pretty Woman'? That was the unexpected answer given by Miss Ohio Audrey Bolte on the "2012 Miss USA Pageant" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on NBC). She was inspired that Julia Roberts' prostitute character "came out on top and she didn’t let anybody stay in her path."
Perhaps not surprisingly, Miss Ohio didn't win the competition. That honor went to a cellist from Rhode Island, 20-year old Olivia Culpo. She will go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.
Culpo didn't get a chance to play her instrument during the telecast. Instead, the contestants strutted the stage during an evening gown competition, and in their bikinis. Rounding out the competition was the aforementioned question-and-answer session. They were joined on stage by Cobra Starship during the bikini round, and Akon during the evening gown presentations.
Culpo was asked her stance on allowing transgender competitors, and she came out in support of the decision. The issue made headlines when a transgender woman was first barred from competing in Canada, before being allowed and nearly winning.
