The battle rounds kicked off on "The Voice," and for the second season in a row, the Steal was in play. The coaches paired up their contestants and forced them to sing a duet. Then, the coach could only pick one contestant to stay with them in the competition. The other used to go home, but the steal enabled the other coaches to try and snatch them up.
Each coach was given two steals, and Shakira wasted no time at all using up both of hers during the first night of competition. She kicked off the night by nabbing the first cast-off from Team Adam in Sasha Allen. The powerhouse vocalist had wowed all four coaches in her first audition, so it was certainly a solid addition. Usher had tried to steal her as well, and was emotionally stunned that she chose Shakira as well.
Later, she managed to grab Karina Iglesias, the Latin powerhouse she hadn't picked during the blind auditions. "Not turning for Karina during the blind auditions has haunted me since then," Shakira said. "I used my last steal to get Karina, and I’m so happy that she’s on my team."
Buddy TV was a little shocked that Shakira blew through her saves so quickly. "Does she not realize that the other coaches still have 13 battles, and she won't get to steal any of the losers?” they asked. But Hollywood Life thought it was a good move, as Shakira's team was definitely looking stronger with those two women in the roster.
The battle rounds continue on "The Voice," Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
