WATCH: 'Same Love' Singer Reveals Struggles With Pentecostal Upbringing

Singer-songwriter Mary Lambert spoke with HuffPost Live recently to discuss her religious childhood and her life since music duo Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis featured her in their song, "Same Love, which became a same-sex marriage anthem earlier this summer.

Lambert talks in length about growing up in a Pentecostal household and how that affected her coming to terms with her sexuality and kept her from being happy in her teenage years. In the clip above, she reveals the lyrics from "Same Love" were inspired by actual events in her teenage years:

I came out when I was 17, I was in the church, I was crying every Sunday for about a year. I came to terms with the fact with this is who I was, I wasn't going to be able to be a different person. At 17 you feel like a freak already, and so to have that fire and brimstone against your attraction is just screwed up!

Lambert, who contributed the chorus to Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis' "Same Love," recently expanded the chorus into a full-length song entitled "She Keeps Me Warm," which is now available for purchase on iTunes.
