Hank Azaria Dismisses 'Smurfs 2' On 'The Daily Show'

Hank Azaria dropped by "The Daily Show" to promote his upcoming drama, "Lovelace." But guest host John Oliver had to talk about another movie Azaria is starring in, "The Smurfs 2." That's because Oliver voices a Smurf in the film while Azaria plays the villainous Gargamel.

Oliver admitted, though, that he'd never actually met Azaria before this interview. “I admire you a lot, I think you’re very cool," Azaria told him. "I admire your comedy. I’m very glad you’re in ‘Smurfs 2’ with me.”

“Like a human-shield, together," Oliver said.

At the end of the interview, Oliver urged viewers to go see "Lovelace." Then he said, "‘Smurfs 2,’ I have not seen. I’m sure it’s great.”

“It is?” Azaria quipped. It's not the first time he's discounted the movie during his press tour. He told Vanity Fair that this is an "interesting moment" in his career. He even made a bold claim to HitFix, saying that "The Smurfs 2" and "Lovelace" are actually more similar than people would expect.

When pressed to explain, he joked, "Well, we painted Amanda [Seyfried] blue one day. That was fun.”

It looks like Azaria isn't done with Gargamel just yet, though. Coming Soon reports that Sony Pictures has already set aside a 2015 release date for a third movie in the "Smurfs" series.
