Shakira may be in need of a confidence boost.
In a recent press event “The Voice” coach said she wouldn’t have made it far in the singing competition if she was in the contestants’ shoes, according to TODAY.
“I would probably get kicked out the first week,” Shak said. “I think that 20 years ago, if there would have been a show like ‘The Voice,’ I don’t know if I would have made it to the finals.”
The comments may come as a shock to those familiar with Shak’s rise to fame.
The star signed with Sony and released her first album, Magia, at the age of 13 in her native Colombia. By the time she was 18, the singer had conquered the airwaves with her powerful rock ballads and breakthrough album Pies Descalzos.
Once Shakira released her first English-language album Laundry Service in 2001, International fame followed.
But her journey as a musician, she says, was a long one.
“I needed time to finesse my talent, to evolve as an artist and figure out my own path,” Shakira said at the “Voice” press event. “What (the show’s contestants) do there is so courageous, and they have to go through so much and it’s nerve-racking!”
The singer-songwriter released her tenth studio album Shakira in March, which includes her recent hit single “Can’t Remember To Forget You” Ft. Rihanna. The self-titled album topped iTunes charts in 60 countries when it debuted.
Last Sunday, Shak and fellow “Voice” coach Blake Shelton performed their new country duet, “Medicine,” at the American Country Music Awards. Before the main event, the 37-year-old singer wowed on the red carpet in a turquoise Zuhair Murad dress.
