According to Deadline, the "Parenthood" cast has agreed to reduce their appearances from nine episodes in what would be the sixth and likely final season of the show. Although, there has been no official word of renewal.
On Friday, April 9, The Hollywood Reporter noted that pay cuts are at least being discussed. A source told the outlet that despite all of the cast's star power, NBC got the cost of the show down to $3.5 million and has refused raises since.
The source, who said that the network needs "Parenthood" to be “more economically feasible," indicated that there will definitively be no more than 13 total episodes, if the show continues.
The cast has been adding to the speculation, but also seem unsure when or if an official decision has been made ... including Sam Jaeger, which (we guess?) means there is hope for Julia and Joel somewhere in Jaeger and Erika Christensen's nine of 13 episodes.
In the past, Craig T. Nelson (Zeek) has slammed the network for their lack of appreciation for the show's small but passionate following. "There are all these people responding to our show," he said, "and NBC is completely out of it."
As the 2014-15 schedule moves closer to finalization, NBC has most recently canceled "Dracula" (which, as the A.V. Club notes, despite having higher ratings than "Hannibal," stood to make the network less in licensing fees) and should have an official announcement on the Braverman saga within a few days.
Dammit, NBC. We're yearning to cry over "Parenthood," just not for this reason.
