Attention, Madonna fans: author Matthew Rettenmund needs your help for a new project he hopes will be the definitive gift for all admirers of the Queen of Pop.
Rettenmund, who is also the founder and editor of the popular gay blog Boy Culture, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Encyclopedia Madonnica: 20th Anniversary Edition. The planned book will be a much-overdue update to 1995's Encyclopedia Madonnica , which, for years, was the literary authority on all things Madonna, featuring exhaustive A to Z entries on all of the superstar's hit albums, videos, movies and tours, not to mention her Michigan upbringing, private relationships and business deals. Of course, as Rettenmund points out, Madonna's career hasn't slowed in the two decades since the publication of the book. There's been her Golden Globe-winning turn as Eva PerĂ³n in 1996's "Evita," the smash "Ray of Light" album in 1998 and her mesmerizing Super Bowl halftime performance in 2012.
And that's just the professional. The mother of four was childless at the time of Encyclopedia's initial publication. She hadn't met her ex-husband, British film director Guy Ritchie, or Jesus Luz and Brahim Zaibat, both former flames. Her headline-generating activities on Instagram have yet to be documented, of course, because Instagram itself wasn't around in 1995.
"The first book covered the first 12 years of Madonna’s career in 200 pages," Rettenmund told The Huffington Post in an email statement. "Now, I have to cover another 20 years, and I have to do it in a way that makes the book a real value to fans spoiled by the 24/7 news cycle. I have to bring fresh material to the table, so the book will include original interviews and never-before-seen photos — I want it to be a fan’s wet dream.”
