Jack White has canceled part of his tour following the death of his band’s keyboardist, Isaiah “Ikey” Owens.
Owens, 38, was reportedly found dead in his Puebla, Mexico, hotel room Tuesday morning. According to TMZ, the keyboard player had played with White’s band at a concert the night before.
Out of respect for Owens, the band said Tuesday that they would cancel their remaining tour dates in Mexico. The band was scheduled to perform in Guadalajara and Monterrey this week, per the AP.
“We will all miss you Ikey. You were and are an incredible artist,” said the band in a statement posted on Facebook.
According to the BBC, the cause of Owens’ death has yet to be determined. However, the Agence-France Presse, quoting an anonymous police official, said Owens may have died of “bronchoaspiration” — defined by the news outlet as the drowning in one’s own fluids, such as vomit.
Owens, a California native who’d recently moved to Nashville, played in several bands during his lifetime, including The Mars Volta and the Long Beach Dub Allstars. According to the Rolling Stones, the keyboardist started working with White in 2012.
“I enjoy what I do, it’s really good,” Owens told the OC Register earlier this year. “I’m really happy with the people I’ve gotten to work with.”
