Things got tense on "Downton Abbey" as the household faced financial strife -- though most don't know it yet. But their woes didn't stop Lord and Lady Grantham from giving their daughter her dream wedding at home. What almost did stop it was the groom-to-be, Matthew.
He'd found out he may well be in line for a healthy inheritance which could save Downton, but he told his fiancee Mary he wasn't sure he wanted to use it for that. It was a tiff that nearly ended their union before it began. Luckily, some wise words from downstairs put them back on the right path and the nuptials went off without a hitch.
The financial struggles came about because of a very bad investment by Robert, and how Downton gets through will likely be a major topic of the season, making it surprisingly relatable to many Americans right now.
The drama continues to unfold both upstairs and downstairs on "Downton Abbey" every Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.
