"I DON'T look like I did thirty years ago -- get over it!"
That's actress Kathleen Turner, soon to be 60. Miss Turner says she's confident and happy with herself, but feels the strain when confronted by fans who remember her svelte sizzle in 1981's "Body Heat."
Still, she has embraced her maturity. Although, these days, 60 really is the new thirty. "You have to get to that place as a woman where you know your worth isn't dependant on your looks."
And Kathleen remains as active and eclectic as ever. She will appear with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in "Dumb and Dumber To" and takes to the D.C. stage in January in "Mother Courage and Her Children." (Turner received excellent notices and full enthusiastic houses for her turn in "Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins.")
WHAT A wonderful thing that HBO put together a tribute documentary to the late James Gandolfini. I'm sure many of you saw it last night, but it is sure to be re-run. You can Hulu or DVR or YouTube it, too. (Remember when TV was really "special?") Gandolfini and "The Sopranos" put HBO on the map in a big way, so this celebration of a life and talent cut so short is more than fitting.
PAUL RUDD is never less than an adorable-looking guy (even in "Our Idiot Brother.") But like many of us, he sometimes struggles with a few extra pounds. However, if you've seen Rudd in recent interviews, he's looking noticeably trimmer.
Although his reps won't confirm, it is said Rudd is on board to play the Marvel comic book character, "Ant-Man." I'm not exactly clear on what Ant-Man does, but I guess he's required to be slim when he does it!
JUSTIN BIEBER was "just kidding" when he announced his retirement last week. And here I thought 2014 was going to be a good year in show biz!
ON THE other hand, it might be a good year after all, if the rampant stories about Bruce Jenner undergoing gender re-alignment are to be believed. If true, I suppose we'll have to re-examine Kris Jenner, mother of all those lovely Kardashian girls.
Either she emasculated Bruce to such an extent that becoming a woman was his only option, or Kris's behavior in the endless, tasteless exploitation of herself and her family was her desperate outlet, living with a man who harbors this desire. Most observers will immediately pick the former over the latter.
In any case, if all this sex-change gossip comes to fruition, you can be sure the E! channel is already negotiating with Kris Jenner to be right there in the operating room. Don't say I didn't warn you.
LOOSE LIPS sink ships and careers and TV shows. Could the anti-gay remarks uttered by "Duck Dynasty" star, Phil Robertson, bring to an end that odd but phenomenally popular series about a family who became millionaires by producing duck-calling devices?
I'm not a big believer in people being ruined or fired over their remarks--even if, as in the cases of Paula Deen, Alec Baldwin and now the Duck People--they can afford it.
Surely Mr. Robertson could have expressed himself differently; going as far as he did is almost death-wish territory. Maybe he wanted off the show and trashing gays is pretty much a good way to see yourself escorted out of the building, so to speak. Frankly, I think his remarks about how "happy" black people were under Jim Crow are much more disturbing and inflammatory. Still, he is entitled to his opinion, how matter how misguided.
The unhappy fact here is how many people agree with him! Just go to some of the articles and view the comments. Misogyny, racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia are alive and well in the U.S.A. And The Advocate putting the Pope on its cover, in a favorable profile, won't change the attitudes of those who follow the ducks. (So many are misinterpreting--deliberately or hopefully--the Pope's stance on gays. It's a softer, kinder, approach but nothing will ever lead to, "Yep, it's okay to be gay!")
Firing people isn't the answer either. I have a real issue with this!
"You've got to be carefully taught" as Oscar Hammerstein musically noted in "South Pacific." And that teaching still goes on, generation after generation.
Some people are already thinking of Valentine's Day. If you are one of those, you could do worse than giving your beloved "Sinatra, With Love." This is a 16-track CD collection of Frank's most romantic ballads. It includes "The Way You Look Tonight"..."My Foolish Heart"..."The Look of Love"..."From This Moment On" and "Our Love is Here to Stay."
"Sinatra, With Love" will be released on January 28th. Oh, and if you want to throw a bauble in with the CD, I'm sure nobody will mind. Never forget--little pets love big baguettes!
"She was a spectacular, spectacular woman!" So said Colin Farrell about his friend Elizabeth Taylor, on the Ellen Degeneres show last week.
Farrell and the movie queen became friends late her life, when she was essentially confined to a wheelchair or bed. It was past-midnight phone calls that bonded them. Farrell spoke at Elizabeth's intimate memorial service in Hollywood. I recall how sincerely and lovingly Colin reminisced about Elizabeth. Some people thought it was tasteless for him for remark that he imagined being Elizabeth's eighth husband. I didn't! Up till the end Elizabeth remained a true romantic and a true sensualist. Had she been physically stronger, believe me, Mr. Farrell would have been added to her list of conquests, no matter her age.
The myth of Elizabeth only sleeping with the men she married is exactly that--a myth. But after Burton, after breaking up another family, she put that whopper out as a defense to being called an immoral woman. She wasn't immoral. But she had her men. And she didn't marry all of them.
I love my "discovery" Colin Farrell, and I loved Elizabeth. I enjoy the fact of their friendship. I'm sure it gave her a lot of pleasure. And he is a better man for having known her.
